Dear SkiPost;

I would like to get a swix profile for waxing my skis. Inoticed on the swix web site they offer several nordic profiles. Some are 2 or 3 part, my question is which profile can i attach the legs to so i can wax when i travel train hard.

Hello,

Good question. The 2 profiles that Swix makes which fit the legs are T0773
Wood/Aluminum and T0793 Lightweight Aluminum. We used both of these profiles last season and they are both great items. The Wood/Alu one is cheaper, but almost twice a heavy, so if weight is important, go with the all Alu one. They both are about the same size and both easily fit in most ski bags. They are both very durable, although the wood one seems to show more wear-and-tear.

Justin,

I just received your SkiPost-we answer, Are Your Skis Ready? I found the article by Kevin Johnson on preparing ski bases especially useful, and would like a little more information about the waxes he suggested using. I have been to many Swix waxing clinics over the years, and most of them recommended hot wax cleaning with CH10 as Kevin does. However, last Spring at the Las Vegas SIA show, one of the Swix reps I talked with told me he thought CH8 worked better for hot wax cleaning. I think he said he thought it floated the dirt out better than CH10. As a result, we ordered more CH8 than we would have otherwise. Would you please ask Kevin¹ to explain the pros and cons of CH8 versus CH10 for hot wax cleaning cross-country ski bases?

CH8 would be a really good alternative to CH10 or BP99. (CH8 is typically used in Alpine instead of CH10 or BP99) CH10 or BP99 work better for cleaning skis at this point in the waxing process because absorb into the base more easily. These waxes will stay molten more easily and therefore hold onto the dirt and contamination better. The main reason to avoid colder temperature waxes at this point, is that the iron temperatures needed to melt them is higher than with CH10 or BP99. Ski bases are very sensitive when they are new, and using a lower temperature iron is helpful to avoid burning your bases. However, after the skis have been waxed many times, we like to use CH8 for hot scraping skis. On our dedicated cold conditions skis, we will use CH7.

Similarly, all the wax clinics I have attended have favored using CH6 after hot
wax cleaning as a means of ³hardening² the base and cutting hairs off the base.
They claimed that the hydrocarbon molecules were smaller than the flourocarbon molecules, and therefore penetrated the base better. So I was surprised that Kevin was recommending the LF6. Would you please ask Kevin to explain the pros and cons of using LF6 versus CH6 for both base prep and as a base wax?

CH6 is a good alternative to LF6. Both waxes are of similar hardness and they both work equally well for hardening the base and cutting the microhairs from the surface. The molecular size of LF6 is slightly larger than CH6, however, they are both so small that they both absorb very easily into the base. The main reason that we use LF6 is how it works as a base wax. We use lots of fluorinated waxes for racing, and fluorinated waxes bond best to other fluorinated waxes so using the LF6 at this point is a good idea.

Thanks for useful articles. I look forward to learning more about waxing and>
ski prep from Kevin.
