This is a question from a Master skier who is looking ahead to Master's World Cup in McCall, ID.
The first is kick wax for the 15K classic. If the snow is soft and mushy, what do you recommend? If it is granular corn or hard slick etc.
It seems that if the snow is soft and transforming you are going to need your klister box. The Universal VM from Swix is good, and if you are still having trouble with the snow being very wet you can add some red or even yellow klister to that (KR 70 is often denoted as being 'Aqua' wax for very wet snow). The softer skis are probably going to be best if the snow is mashed potato, but if it is just a wet, glazed track you will want to test a pair of stiffer skis. If there are klister conditions but a little loose 'powdery' snow you are going to want to think about letting your klister cool completely, and cover it with a hardwax. This is a tricky process, but will help your skis avoid icing up when you hit the fluffy snow.
Second question is structure. We will have both the Swix structure tool and a cross-hatch structure tool. Which structure is good for the warm, possibly wet snow?
If it seems like it is going to rain or the snow is holding lots of moisture a good linear rill is going to be good to have down first. This is what Swix's riller will do for your skis. Using a fairly deep rill is going to be better as it gets more wet. I have always liked to put a cross-hatching structure over the top of the Swix structure. This tends to break up any suction you might encounter from standing water in the trail. If there is no water, and it is just very wet snow, a more shallow Swix rill under a cross-structure rill will work the best. Since you have both tools there, you will benefit from using both. The cross-hatched structure on top is something that we came up with a few years ago, and it really did seem to speed the skis up.
GOOD LUCK!

Stir-fry With Brown Rice
Ingredients:
Brown Rice
Steak, chicken, pork, precut for stir-fry (Shrimp can be used too)
Fresh ginger (grated) – or 1 tbsp of chopped (jar variety)
Fresh garlic 2 cloves – or 2 tsp of chopped (jar variety)
Soy sauce or tamari sauce
Peanut oil (about 2 tsp per serving)
Sesame oil (about 1 tsp per serving)
Red cabbage ¼ head
Sugar snap peas
Red pepper
Green pepper
Onion
Other vegetables that stir-fry well:
Water chestnuts
Bamboo
Edemame
Broccoli
Bok choy
You can also use a frozen vegetable stir-fry mix (choose one without additives/flavorings)
Cook rice in rice cooker or on stove according to instructions. The rice will take anywhere from 20-60 minutes to cook so start it first.
In a very large skillet, or preferably a wok, heat the peanut oil. When hot, add the meat, ginger, garlic, and onion. Continue to cook for a few minutes then add the peppers, peas, cabbage, sesame oil, and soy sauce. Cook until the vegetables are tender but not soft.
Timing is important with stir-fry. Make sure you add slower cooking vegetables (onions, carrots, broccoli) and meats first. Chicken needs to be cooked more thoroughly than beef or pork and shrimp doesn’t take very much time at all (and is tough when over-cooked). Sesame oil should be added at the end because it is more delicate oil and has the tendency to burn. If you more flavor try adding the ginger and garlic later in the cooking process because it will retain more flavor.

9:15 - 42k & 21k classic @; 9:45 - 42k freestyle ;10:00 - 21k & 10k freestyle
Forecast: Friday high of 39 F, Friday night low of 15 F,withclear skies. Saturday high of 44 F, with clear skies.
Racestart temp’s predicted to be in the low to mid 20’s for classic, high 20’s skate. By 11:00, 34 F, with clear skies. It’s going to be dry & warm, unless the next storm moves up, and then all bets are off.
Ski Selection: Medium flex ski with a universal grind. The SWIX Super Riller with the 1.0 mm blade would work best for these conditions. Boulder Nordic Sports recommends their Q 1.3 grind.
Base Prep:
ClassicClean kick zone with SWIX base cleaner and fiberlene, then sand kick zone with 100 grit sandpaper.
Classic & Skate: Clean & prep your glide zones (classic) or your skate skis by ironing in SWIX BP88 (base prep), scrape and brush using a Medium Bronze (T162) or Fine Steel (T192) brush. This is very important to open up the base to receive race wax.
Finally, apply a layer of Swix MB77 base conditioner. Scrape and brush with Medium Bronze or Fine Steel brush.
Kick Wax
Base Wax:Apply a thin layer of SWIX VG35 binder and iron, then let it cool completely. Cover this w/ a thin layer of SWIXV40 (blue extra), iron, let cool, & cork it smooth.
Race Wax: Apply 4 thin layers of SWIX VR60 (silver), corking thoroughly between each layer. Cover this with 1-2 thin layers of SWIX VR50 (Violet). The VR50 will allow you to glide early in the race, then the VR60 will bleed through as the temp & snow warm up.
**Check the SWIX/Subaru Tech tent for kick wax updates on race day.**
Glide Wax
Deluxe Race Wax: Iron in a layer of SWIX HF8 (red). Scrape & brush w/ SWIX White Nylon brush (T161B or T183B). Cover this with SWIX FC8 (universal Cera F powder). Follow instructions on swixracing.us or in the SWIXNordic Racing manual.
Economy Race Wax: Iron in a layer of SWIX LF8 (red). Scrape & brush w/ SWIX White Nylon brush (T161B or T183B)
Notes: Look for wax recommendation updates on Thursday on our website, swixracing.us, and on Saturday morning at the Snow Mt. Ranch Nordic Center.

THE EQUINOX SKI CHALLENGE: How Far Can You Go?
When else might you race in the springtime sun and then continue into the night under a full moon while on your way to skiing farther than you ever have
before. Or to tag your teamate and hang out by the all night bonfire!
There will be a 6 Hour and 12 Hour divisions in conjunction with the headlining 24 Hour race. All categories are open to both relay teams and soloists. This year the 9 kilometer course will be lit by a nearly full moon if the skies are clear, (headlamps still recommended)! Last year we saw multiple 24 Hour soloists exceed 300km and a team at just under 400km on the challenging loops. To avoid skiing on refrozen chop, we have two courses set up and will switch to the fresh course about 12 hours into the race.
The Equinox Ski Challenge will support local organizations that are keeping our
communities mentally and physically healthy by raising funds for the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation, a ski advocacy group, and for Manaia Youth Programs, a youth leadership and empowerment program serving Gallatin
and Park counties in Montana. Participants are encouraged to bring food donations for the West Yellowstone Food Bank. Those donating food will be entered into a special raffle.
The festivities will include a costume contest to be judged at the start of the race, a potluck with beverages on Saturday evening, and an all night bonfire near the start/finish line. Complete details and registration forms are available at www.equinoxskichallenge.com. Volunteers are warmly welcomed as well.

FRIENDS OF XC SKIING
Both to commemorate the exciting results from our Nordic athletes so far this season, and in anticipation of the races next week and the pre-World Championships in Liberec in February, we're offering a program called Friends of Cross Country, which is already giving a wide range of U.S. Ski Team alumni, supporters, fans and recreational skier a way to be involved with the team, and to help to capture the momentum the athletes have as they race toward Vancouver in 2010, Sochin in 2014, and beyond.
Enthusiasts nationwide are now able to show their support of the Team as a Friend of Cross Country by giving a gift as low as $50. The Norwegian Ski Federation as operated an identical program for a number of years, and they sell 8,000 hats annually. Skiers of all ages and abilities in Norway show their support for their team by wearing their "Langrennsportens Venner" hats from the current year, and from years gone by. We've started to challenge Norway on the ski trails - surpassing them in nationwide community support is a key area to sustaining that challenge.
The results we've seen so far this season from athletes like Kikkan Randall, Andrew Newell, Kris Freeman, Bill Demong and Johnny Spillane are thanks to
the efforts of the entire U.S. skiing community including race organizers, community coaches, divisional leaders and dedicated supporters. This support has enabled athletes at all levels of our development pipeline to perform their best. Because of this, our athletes are better prepared to compete with their peers internationally. USSA has made new, high-performance investments in nordic skiing including:
· Coach, parent, club and officials education
· Greater support for elite-level development
· Investments in sport science, such as force measurement analysis tools
· State of the art roller skiing treadmill
· Nutritional, medical and performance psychology support
· 2010 Olympic venue training camps
· 2010 Whistler fast-skis project
Our athletes can achieve their goals and inspire generations of young kids to participate in this healthful, lifelong family sport.
