I have a great deal of difficulty picking up on variations in terrain on ski trails under low light conditions. What do you guys recommend for skiing in the low light conditions that we get in the fall and early winter?

In low light conditions we like the Yellow Lens from Rudy Project. This lens permits 81% light transmission while enhancing contrast and depth. For more information on which lens will maximize each light condition check out Rudy's lens technology at http://www.rudyprojectusa.com/technology/lenstechnology.htm

I just wanted to take a chance to give you an idea what much of the ski world is up to. I am sitting in a hotel in Fairbanks, AK waiting for the second ski session of the day. Lars Flora and Chad Giese are my two roommates, and we are giving our Salomon skis some much anticipated work. Many of the best skiers in the US are going to be making their way to Fairbanks for the first of the Supertour races starting next weekend. Stay tuned to SkiPost for race updates, and we will let you know how this early season is beginning to shape up.

Sincerely,
Justin Easter

Muscle Maintenance

By Chad Giese
Subaru Factory Team
Muscle maintenance may seem like a foreign idea to many people out there training hard, but it is just as crucial as all of the interval workouts.   To get the most benefit from the hard workouts we must have muscles that are ready to accept the stress.  This requires taking time outside of training to do things that will aid in your recovery.  Not only those training full time, but even juniors and master skiers should pay attention to muscle maintenance to train effectively and stay healthy.

Here I a few things that I focus on when thinking about muscle maintenance and recovery:

  • Recovery drinks or food (after workout).  This one is probably the easiest to do but when training twice a day it is crucial.  Get some carbohydrates and protein into the system immediately after training to speed recovery so you are ready to go for the next workout.  There are many recovery drinks out there and most don't taste the best, but find one you like.  If you don't want to take on the expense, just put some food in the car and make sure to drink water with it.
  • Stretching (1 x / day).  There have been mixed messages about this over the years, but I find that it makes a difference in keeping me loose.  Pick a routine and a time during the day to stretch and be consistent with it.  I have also used Yoga for this, which provides a great core workout and balance work as well as a good stretching session.  Find something that fits your schedule and stick with it.
  • Massage (1-2 times per month).  This is something that gets overlooked by many athletes but is great for relieving tight, cramped, or sore muscles.  Many elite skiers rely on massage to prevent injuries and allow the muscles to recover faster by stimulating blood flow through the muscles and dissipating knots and tightness.  Cost may be the limiting factor for most, but the effects are worth the price.  A massage every two or three weeks may be a good place to start and you'll feel the difference immediately.
  • Physical Therapy.  If you have had injuries or a nagging problem that is affecting your training, this may be the best appointment you will ever make.  Find a good PT, one that works with athletes and understands how hard we push ourselves, and they will get you back on track faster than taking time off.  Don't neglect the little injuries which may only develop into something bigger.  Body alignment has as much to do with how our muscles work as all of the training we do, maybe more.  Make sure your primary doctor is involved in this dialogue though.
All of these things will allow you to train more effectively and recover more quickly.  We want the training we do to accomplish a goal, not be counterproductive.  Paying attention to the little details makes good athletes great athletes, or top 300 in the Birkie skiers top 200 in the Birkie skiers.  The training must still be done, and we must train hard, but these little things will help you to be ready for the next workout.
