SkiPost ~

So, I have a few questions for you that are in the spirit of SkiPost.

I would love to get outside more and have a wider range of options for my weekend jaunts. Currently, when there's snow, I snowshoe. I want to become more solid on my skis (I have no idea what they are... the length is right and they're no-wax cross country skis. That's about has far as I know.) and would like to work out on them once in a while in lieu of going to the gym. I don't go to the gym on Saturday or Sunday, i.e. when I'm not at work, and I'd love to have some idea about a good, useful, can-be-done-in-a-morning ski workout. Easy would be ideal.

Any ideas? I thought you'd be a good place to start before I move onto unknown ski instructors here in town or try it on my own. I am in pretty decent heart shape and I am fairly strong (though I have ankle and knee creaks that are new... I think I'm getting closer and closer to 30. Sigh.) I have a decent sense of balance. I don't need the day-long workouts, of course (and I've always wondered HOW you do that) but would love something I can do in the woods close by or down the road in the elementary school ball field.

HI,

I hope the snow is falling, and this question has some urgency to it. My answers are going to be pretty simple, but they will help just about everyone get out the door if they are in your spot. Being in some type of shape is going to be important before you head out the door. It will make the experience more exciting for you, and it will certainly make you want to go more often. You have done this, so you have step one covered.

I would suggest making sure your skis are in correct order. Your boots need to fit your feet, and do so comfortably. Your skis, though they are no-wax, will need to be waxed in their glide zones to make them slide better, and work for seasons to come. This is something that I would take up with a local shop if you do not have your own wax equipment.

Now for the workout suggestions. You need to set a goal for yourself. Some goals I would suggest are going to be on the order of finding a loop or a certain time and setting out to meet that time or distance. Your times and distances should reflect your shape, and confidence on skis as you get started. When you feel more and more smooth on your skis you can begin adding time and distance.

I am a firm believer that people tend to learn how to ski by watching others who are better skiers. I think the best thing to do is to get use to being on your skis in a field or around your house, but make your way out to an actual ski facility. Many communities have nonprofit groups in place that are grooming trail systems (most often easy terrain) for the entire community to enjoy. You just need to do a little exploring to find such trails. Twin Brook in Cumberland, ME has such a trail system set up, and great for learning!

Enjoy being outside, and let us know how your ski progress is coming along.

Sincerely,
Justin Easter

SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah (January 3, 2006) -The Subaru Factory Team was 2 for 2 in the Men's and Women 15k/30k National Championship Freestyle races in Soldier Hollow, UT. The top-ranked cross country skiers from around the US are competing Jan. 3-10 at Soldier Hollow for their last chance to qualify for the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy.

Athletes' Olympic dreams are riding on their performances at Nationals as several days after the close of US Championships on Saturday, Jan. 17, the US Olympic Cross Country Team will be announced. Up to eight men and up to eight women will be named to represent the United States in Italy.

Teammates Rebecca Dussault and Ivan Babikov both crossed the finish line in first place, each winning a SuperTour National Championship. The win was also the 8th US National title for Dussault who is a top favorite to represent the US at the Winter Olympic games in Torino.

Joining Dussault on the podium today was her teammate Abby Larson. Larson has been quickly moving up the USSA points ranking and with today's finish, it looks like Larson will join Dussault as an Olympic teammate as well.

Ivan Babikov once again proved he deserves to be considered amongst the world's best skiers by crushing the rest of the field, finishing a minute and a half over his closest competitor. The defending SuperTour National and Grand Champion, inspired by his recent 4th place World Cup finish, will attempt to make the 2006 Olympics as a member of the Russian national team.

Tech Talk

Dear SkiPost,

I have three brush questions.

1-I wanted to buy a T162, but my ski shop only had a T155 and they said it should be used the same way the T162 is used.  Is this brush just as good?
2- Should the T158 only be used before the wax is on the ski or can it be used as a first brush after waxing?
3- Also when I wax for very cold conditions, you said I should brush, brush, and brush more. What brush should I be using for this.  I have four Swix brushes, T158, T155, older white nylon and a T160.

HELLO,

You have some good questions. Let me answer them for you:

1. The T155 and T162 can be used the same way, i.e. for initial brushing AFTER waxing, however the T162 will perform much better doing it's job, that is removing the wax from the base structure. The older T155 is a nylon brass mixture. It is a bit softer and will do a good job removing warmer waxes, but, it is a bit too soft for cold waxes (CH4, CH6).

2. T158 is used primarily for opening up or refreshing the base BEFORE waxing. It is pretty aggressive so it is not commonly used as a first brush after waxing, however, you could use it LIGHTLY for one - two strokes. The preferable brush to use AFTER waxing would be the T162 for 8-10 strokes, followed by the T160 for 5-10 strokes.

Please note, and this addresses your #3 question, Swix also has a new fine steel brush T197. This is an excellent soft steel brush (much more durable) and many are preferring it to the T162. The beauty of T197 is you only need 3-4 strokes of this brush. In very cold conditions, you must clean out all wax from your base structure. Here is where brushing very much helps, and, is where the T197 excels in performance.

T158-open up bases prior to waxing
T162 - first brushing after waxing
T197- final brushing
T160- final polishing

Hope this helps. Visit our new website

COLORADO CUP CROSS-COUNTRY SKI RACE SERIES

A series of cumulatively scored Nordic races set to go for 2005-2006 season

Natron Nordic Enterprises, Skifire Inc., and a group of Colorado Nordic ski areas have combined efforts to create a nine-race series of cumulatively scored cross-country skiing competitions. The series will be scored similar to World Cup races, allowing skiers to accumulate points and compete for overall placing during an entire season of events.

The series includes nine well-established races that have a history of being the best events in Colorado. The Colorado Cup will join these successful events together using their established venues, distances, and techniques while providing a cumulative scoring system. Racers will be given points based on their finishing position and ranked overall by gender as well as in 10-year age group categories. At the end of the season the Colorado Cup will be awarded to overall senior and junior champions as well as age group winners. Natron Nordic Enterprises has donated four 1-year training plans to be awarded as prizes for the overall and junior champions.

The intent of the Colorado Cup is to provide a system that will support and develop junior skiers all the way through to master and elite skiers while also standardizing Nordic events so that competitors and ski areas can get the most out of every race, all season long.

More information, including the complete schedule, scoring system, event and series details as well as results can be found at www.natronnordic.com in the "Colorado Cup" section. The results will be compiled and updated approximately one week after each event. For additional information, contact Matt Muir at Skifire Inc., email Matt at matt@skifire.com, be sure to include "Colorado Cup" in the subject line.
