Hello SkiPost:

I have been skiing for over twenty years, both classic and skating, enjoying every season, some with racing, some without. During this time frame, my knowledge of waxing techniques and wax products have not kept up with all the changes. Now that I have two kids that will be starting to race in the next few years, I'm sure that they will be looking to Dad to help them make sure their skis are prepared properly, or at least as close as possible.

Realizing that it would very difficult for us to own every wax and waxing tool that a supported racing team such as The Subaru Factory Team might have at their disposal. Can you recommend a starting point for items that should be in a basic kit, and Items to be added each year as budgets allow? I also realize that this is probably based upon each persons climate. In our case we make the Lake Tahoe region our home.

Thanks

Waxing is an area in cross-country skiing that has advanced at an amazing rate. As I was growing up I realized that every year there were faster and more expensive waxes hitting the marketplace. Now the chemistry of ski wax seems to be in a firm place, and small advances are being made to refine products that are outstanding.

We first of all suggest that you and any person with limited resources (including us) stick to one wax system. The Subaru Factory Team uses ONLY SWIX wax and tools. Why? It is an easy system to understand, and in turn is simply the most effective. There are some very essential pieces that will cover you on almost every day you go out to ski.

For any family attempting to get started you are going to want the following:

Glide Wax
-A sharp scraper (T0824) to remove glide wax
-Swix Base Prep (BP088) for travel wax and new skis
-Glide wax with Florocarbons will be important for fast skis in the spring in Tahoe. These waxes cost more, but make a WORLD of difference. Floro waxes to start with are HF7, 8, and 10.
-LF6 and 7 are great for a starting kit for lower humidity snow.
-CH4 or LF3 are good for the very cold days. (which Tahoe never has)

Kick Wax
-As time goes on and racing is on the agenda you should start using the VR line of hardwax. This VR line is good because as the temps go up you use higher numbered VR waxes (example: VR45 for new snow around 25'F; VR55 for new snow around 33'F)
-To get started go with the full range of the V line. This is similar to the older waxes used for many years (Green, Blue, Blue Extra, Violet Special, Violet, Red Special, Red/Silver). This will cover you in every hardwax condition, and is also easy to understand. Note: The Subaru Factory Team often race on Blue Extra or Violet Special - two of the finest waxes of all time!
-In Tahoe it is essential to have Klister! When I have raced in your area Swix VM Universal with KR60 (Red Klister) has been the ticket. Also some cold klister for those icy morning conditions.

Accessories
-Irons that are made for ski wax are essential. Spend the extra money to get a good wax iron. The temperature of wax irons are constant, and will not burn your base if used correctly.
-Always have sharp scrapers on hand, and something to remove your kick wax. I enjoy Swix Citrus Solvent (smells like oranges).

This is a pretty radical list of "stuff to get started." I think I may have even gotten a little carried away with suggestions, but I tried to emphasize the items that will be good for anyone getting a kit together while siting the important items for your specific area. The truth is you are going to want to go down to your local Swix dealer, and get some advice from them. For tips on how to wax, and what waxes to choose go to http://www.swixschool.com

See you at the Great Ski Race,
Justin Easter

-Brushes-

-Brush types and brushing techniques are constantly changing. However, basic brushing and the brushes needed are quite clear. It is in the specialty brush area that brush materials and brushing techniques are changing year by year. Interesting, but hard to keep up with product offerings and instructions.

- Steel bristle brushes are increasing in popularity. The new T-180 Oval and T-163 Rectangular are used periodically to recondition the base surface by removing burnished and oxidized polyethylene and redefining structure.

- The T-181 Oval Coarse Bronze and the T-158 Rectangular Coarse Bronze are used each time before waxing, but now, so is the new T-192 Steel Brush.

- Also new is a Fine Steel Brush, T-197 that is used after scraping especially in wet snow to ensure the structure is opened to help reduce wet snow friction. This brush really gets into the structure and has a scary feeling when using it. Some feel it is better used along with the coarsest steel brushes to clean out and redefine base textures. This fine steel brush is expensive to manufacture and therefore has a high price for a brush that might not do much more than the Medium Coarse Bronze Brush.

- The most important brush of all is the Oval T182 or Rectangular T162 Medium
Coarse Bronze Brush. This is the first brush after scraping. Many technicians consider the brushing completed after using this brush.

- The nylon brushes mostly are used as the final finish brush. The primary result is sweeping away the last remaining wax particles and giving the base a good finished appearance.

- Also popular in cross country is the new Stiff Black Nylon Brush, T194, for "brushing-up" Cera F after the first pass with an iron. The final finishing brushes for Cera F are now mostly the horsehair brush or the new short bristled blue nylon brush.

Note: It is recommended that metal bristle brushes not be used for brushing Cera F.

- A new handy brush for use at the start site in alpine & snowboard, and XC sprints is the T-196 Combi Brush. Natural cork on one side for corking in Cera F, and short nylon bristles on the other.

24 Hours of Telemark!

The 24 Hours of Telemark is a cross-country ski relay race with teams of one to six members competing against each other in different age divisions and categories. The team, or individual, in each category that completes the most laps in 24 hours is the winner.

Held each winter since 2002, this x-c race is fun for cross-country skiers of all abilities. The race course is a short but challenging loop immediately adjacent to Telemark Lodge. With the course right out the door of the lodge, it's just a few short steps from skiing to warm rooms and changes of clothes, as well as Telemark's outstanding hospitality.

The 24 Hours of Telemark has grown in size and class each year. The prize list for 2006 (donated by our generous sponsors) looks to be huge... and much of it will be given away as door prizes. Maybe you should join us this year?

Please visit www.24hoursoftelemark.com for more info.

COLORADO CUP CROSS-COUNTRY SKI RACE SERIES

A series of cumulatively scored nordic races set to go for 2005-2006 season

Natron Nordic Enterprises, Skifire Inc., and a group of Colorado Nordic ski areas have combined efforts to create a nine-race series of cumulatively scored cross-country skiing competitions. The series will be scored similar to World Cup races, allowing skiers to accumulate points and compete for overall placing during an entire season of events.

The series includes nine well-established races that have a history of being the best events in Colorado. The Colorado Cup will join these successful events together using their established venues, distances, and techniques while providing a cumulative scoring system. Racers will be given points based on their finishing position and ranked overall by gender as well as in 10-year age group categories. At the end of the season the Colorado Cup will be awarded to overall senior and junior champions as well as age group winners. Natron Nordic Enterprises has donated four 1-year training plans to be awarded as prizes for the overall and junior champions.

The intent of the Colorado Cup is to provide a system that will support and develop junior skiers all the way through to master and elite skiers while also standardizing Nordic events so that competitors and ski areas can get the most out of every race, all season long.

More information, including the complete schedule, scoring system, event and series details as well as results can be found at www.natronnordic.com in the "Colorado Cup" section. The results will be compiled and updated approximately one week after each event. For additional information, contact Matt Muir at Skifire Inc., email Matt at matt@skifire.com, be sure to include "Colorado Cup" in the subject line.
