Thanks for your great publication, I enjoy the info/tips very much and look forward to reading it. Please sent me/e-mail me a chart illustrating the waxing comparisons for the new and old waxing types for Classic skiing. An example would be what blue or extra- special blue would be compared to what in the new waxes. I have some of the old canisters left but need to buy some of the new type for this season.

Thanks K

K,

There are a few really exciting things that have happened in the past few years with regard to kick wax. One of the most important changes is base binder. Base
binder has been around for a long time, but it seems that it has been relative to klister skiing (i.e. warm klister over a cold 'base klister.'). Swix has a very good hard wax binder called VG 035. This is a green wax that should be applied and then ironed in under any hard wax you hope to have stick around. Almost all of the racing hard waxes you will apply will have a binder layer under them. The truly special part of VG 035 is that if your top layer of wax wears off (read: LONG classic races, training days) you will get kick from the base binder. This can be explained by the number beside the VG - 035. These numbers are how Swix measures hardness of their hard wax, and 035 is very close to 040 (Blue Extra). Therefore, many of the actual kicking properties found in Blue Extra can still be found in VG 035.

The VR line of kick wax is what you will be making the move toward if you are looking to fill gaps, and getting more specific in temp. ranges. These waxes have essentially taken the place of many of the old 'extra special blue'-type waxes, and represent high performance, fluorinated waxes. The fluorination will help with water management and dirt repulsion.

One of the unique properties found in the VR line from VR045 to VR065 & VR075 is the use of a silver additive. This silver additive is actually ground aluminum. The aluminum is finely ground in the colder hard waxes to prevent sharp snow crystals from penetrating the kick wax (this is particularly useful in shady areas on a course where the snow crystals are still sharp when a majority of the course is warming). At higher temperatures the aluminum is less-finely ground and will help keep dirt from sticking to the wax.

Visit these pages to read exactly what the people at Swix have to say about their waxes, and this will certainly allow you to make a very informed decision.

Are You Ready?

It is that time of year again when we skiers put away the rollerskis, the running shorts and the rest of the summer toys. It is time to dust off the skis, rummage through the back of the closet for the hats, mittens and long underwear. Its time to ski again and this means it is time to start thinking about smart ways to transition back to being on snow
I have been skiing for over 30 years now and every time I put my skis on for the first time of the season I can never seem to get over the feeling of how long my skis feel. As I ski down the track for the first time I always feel somewhat self conscious about how I look, hoping that no one is watching and hoping I do not hook my ski tips on every tree out there.

After the skis do not feel quite so long, which usually happens after a couple of kilometers, it is important to get back to the basics. These first days on snow are critical for creating good technical skiing habits for the season and this is why it is so important to focus on skiing with good technique.

Here are some suggestions for starting the year off right:

1. Skating: Start by skating without poles. This not only builds your leg strength, but helps you to focus on the importance of weight shift. Think of good technique (watch some video of yourself or other skiers if this helps) and practice visualizing those images while out skating. Start by skiing without poles for 5- 10 minutes and work your way up to 20 - 30 minutes on a variety of terrain.

2. Classic: The first couple of times classic skiing can be quite a shock, especially after a summer of roller skiing when the kick is never bad. If you find yourself slipping do not be so quick to add extra wax. It is possible you are used to that guaranteed rollerski kick and your body needs to remember what it was like to finesse the kick. Learn how to feel the kick early and it will surely pay off pay off later.

3. Keep intensity low at first. Skiing is harder then most other exercise, because it utilizes both upper and lower body, and it is easy to ski too fast, especially with the excitement of being on snow for the first time. Learning how to ski slowly with good technique will help tremendously when it is time to go hard in intensity sessions or races. After a good week of skiing work your way into some faster workouts.

4. Refuel: During the summer it is hot, and when it is hot you sweat. When you sweat you feel the need to drink. In the winter you do not sweat but through evaporation you loose equal amounts of fluids, even though it doesn't seem as obvious that you need water. A good sports drink like Gleukos is crucial! Be sure to drink at least every 15 minutes. In addition, being out in the cold zaps your energy and your body burns more calories to stay warm. Keep this in mind and bring along a healthy snack and some extra fluids to have after your ski.

5. Stay Healthy: When we train we break down our immune system which makes it easy to catch a bug. It is important to take precautions especially in the winter. Washing your hands, Changing into dry cloths, and eating healthy foods can help us stay healthy. Start making a habit of these things when you get on the snow and it will become routine for the entire season.

With a full season of great skiing ahead, you do not need to rush into things. Consider some of these tips and use the first couple of days on snow as a great base for the rest of the season!

See you out on the Trails.

Why Swix Blue Extra?

Glad you asked. Blue Extra is the wax that so many ski racers hope for. It has evolved from being only a wax to being used to describe conditions outside - "It was one of those Blue Extra days out there. Man, it was awesome!"

Blue Extra uses hardening agents that allow it to work as the temperatures get colder. Rather than staying soft and icing up, Blue Extra will get physically harder and adapt to the conditions. This has come in very handy over the years in longer classic events, because if the temperature at the starting line is 15F and you anticipate it will warm up through the race Blue Extra will perform well from start to finish.

Bottom line, you should have this in your wax kit, and often in your pocket. It could just be the most loyal skiing partner you'll ever have.

We are skiing in West Yellowstone! Doug Edgerton started grooming over the weekend and with 12 – 14 inches of snow on the ground the trails are in great shape! The Yellowstone Ski Festival is only a few days away – it takes place next week on November 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25, 2006 in West Yellowstone, Montana. The event’s highlights include a series of one, three and five day Nordic skiing clinics, the SuperTour races, the Try It and Buy It Equipment Demo and an Indoor Ski Show.

Here’s an update on the latest Ski Festival developments:

Don’t miss the Friday night slide show!

Free Heel and Wheel Celebrates 10 Years in Business: It’s been ten years since Melissa Alder and Kelli Sanders decided to open Free Heel and Wheel. Since then, West Yellowstone’s favorite Nordic ski and bike shop has become an oasis for muscle-powered recreational enthusiasts. Free Heel and Wheel, located at 40 Yellowstone Avenue, is Nordic ski headquarters for the Yellowstone Ski Festival. Need skis? Coffee? Boots? Lunch? Gloves? Clothing? They’ve got it all. Free Heel and Wheel is the place to be during the Ski Festival (if you can get in the door). Stop in and congratulate Melissa and Kelli on 10 great years!

Join the Subaru Factory Team on Wednesday November, 22nd at Free Heel and Wheel for a pressure mapping clinic. The Subaru Factory Team and Salomon have cutting edge technology that allows you to see how weight is being distributed across your skis. Bring your skis, classic and skate, along this evening and let us show you how they interface with the snow.

Try It and Buy It Gear Demo: At this point, all of the manufacturers that you have come to expect to see at the Yellowstone Ski Festival are planning to return this year. They include: Alpina, Atomic, Boulder Nordic Sport, Craft, Exel, Fischer, Holmenkol, K2, Madshus, Podiumwear, Rossignol, Swix, and TOKO. Stone Grinding by Boulder Nordic Sport and Engineered Tuning: Engineered Tuning partners Boulder Nordic Sport (BNS) and Caldwell Sport Specialties (CSS) will bring a full-service stone-grinding ski shop to the Yellowstone Ski Festival November 20-26. Owners Nathan Schultz (BNS) and Zach Caldwell (CSS) will travel to the event with two Tazzari stone grinding machines (skis that are stone ground generally absorb more wax and perform better) and staff to provide professional ski service at the season-opening event.

For over 25 years, West Yellowstone, Montana has played host to cross country skiers during the month of November. There is no better place to start your ski season! We’ll see you next week!
