Hi Abby,

Don Hurst once introduced us during a brief "trail meeting" while out for a local ski. So it is always good to see your name!

Years ago our family averaged three 8oz glasses of whole milk daily. Later we switched to skim(no fat)milk. About two years ago we reduced to one glass per day (I do not remember the reason). You are recommending dairy in your nutrition article. Do you mean whole or skim milk, and, how much daily? I am a 72 yr old guy who loves XC skiing and do the 50km Noque yearly( and looks like I am up to it again this year if we get the snow to hold the event).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

Dairy is a great way to get calcium and protein in the diet. It is recommended that 3 servings of dairy be consumed daily. These servings can be obtained through milk (8 oz), yogurt (8 oz), or cheese (1 oz). It is always preferable for children and adults over the age of 4 to consume low-fat or non-fat dairy products (i.e. skim milk verses whole milk). Whole milk has the same amount of protein and calcium as skim but with twice the calories and all the additional calories come from saturated fat. I recommend drinking skim or 1% milk and choosing yogurt that is low in fat and added sugars and choosing reduced fat cheeses or eating full-fat cheeses in moderation. Keep up the good work and enjoy your winter!

ESSAY CONTEST

Dear Young Skiers,

If you are between the ages of 10 and 16 I want to hear from you. The Subaru Factory Team is running an essay contest starting now. This is how this works, and why you should get your teammates involved:

1. Write an essay, no longer than 1000 words, on your favorite skiing memory. This can include racing or your favorite day on snow - use your imagination!

2. The winner of this essay contest will have their essay published in SkiPost.

3. The winner's club/team will receive 1 160g block of each SWIX HF7, HF8, and HF10 (this is FAST wax that will make your whole team quick!).

4. The winner will also receive a Subaru Factory Team Craft top, and Salomon VIP code number for purchasing select Salomon items.

5. There will be 3 runner-up awards, and this will include a little grab-bag of cool Subaru stuff, and a signed poster from the 2007 Subaru Factory Team (presented after the American Birkebeiner when we are all together to sign them).

Coaches should encourage as many of your team as possible to do this. Please send your essays to weanswer@skipost.com. Please write the word ESSAY in the 'subject' line. You can put it in the body of the email or attach it.

US NATIONALS - REPORT DAY 1

FREEMAN, WEIER WIN CLASSIC COMPETITION

HOUGHTON MI – The U.S. Ski Team dominated the opening day of the 2007
U.S. Cross Country Championships in Houghton, Michigan. U.S. team members took five of the six podium spots in the men's 10 kilometer and women's 5 kilometer races.

Kris Freeman from Andover, New Hampshire, took the top stop in the men's race, and Lindsay Weier of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, took the women's title. Both are members of the US Ski Team and competed in the 2002 and 2006 Olympics. Weier will also compete with her college team at Northern Michigan University this year.

Racers faced record high temperatures at the Michigan Tech Nordic Training Center, with the mercury soaring to 41. Skiers report that the trails held up well despite the "heat." Groomers will be working late into the night getting the track ready for the freestyle race on Thursday.

Andy Newell of the U.S. Ski Team finished second in the men's race, with Chris Cook taking the third spot. For the women, Kikkan Randall finished second and Laura Valaas (CXC - Salomon) was third. Valaas, who skis for the Central Cross Country Ski Team, was the only non-US team member on the podium.

Freeman took first place by 42 seconds, while Weier's margin of victory was 9 seconds. Only 1 second separated the second and third place finishers in the women's race.

In addition to the national title races, the races represent part of the $130,000 Cross Country SuperTour, with double points awarded. Freeman, who won four straight races after returning from snowless Europe earlier this month, and Caitlin Compton from the Central Division's fledgling CXC squad, are the overall leaders coming into Houghton

"The community has really come together for these championships and it's great to see that kind of support. They've put in a lot of work," said Pete Vordenberg, head coach for the U.S. Ski Team.

The races also include the U.S. disabled championships, as they have every year since 1986 when USSA became the first federation to roll the disabled cross-country championships into the able-bodied nationals.

Chris Klebl won the men's sit-ski competition, while Monica Bascio won the women's title. Sit skiers traverse the course on a skiing equivalent to a wheelchair, using their poles and arm strength to propel themselves through the entire race. The men sit skiers went 12 kilometers, while the women skied 9 kilometers.

Women racers had the advantage today, starting in the morning with cooler temperatures and a nice hard track to ski on. The temperature climbed during the afternoon men's race, making for soft and slippery conditions toward the end of the race.

The U.S. Cross Country Championships will continue on Thursday with the freestyle race: 10 kilometers for the women and 15 kilometers for the men. The temperature is expected to be even warmer, with the National Weather Service predicting a high of 44.

"Despite these warm temperatures, our base is holding up fine," said organizing committee chair Mike Abbott. "We trucked in 200 truckloads of snow last weekend to make a solid base in the stadium and on our 5 kilometer course."

After Thursday's freestyle race, competitors will have a training day on Friday, then the individual sprints on Saturday and team sprints on Sunday.

A complete list of results and the schedule for the remaining three races are at www.seniornationals.org.

Just once a year a trail is groomed through 36km of lava flows, hemlock, fir, and pine forest stands in remembrance of Emil Nordeen, the decorated Central Oregon ski pioneer. The manageable terrain and distance makes this point-to-point freestyle race a great event for first time racers and recreational skiers. Beginning at Mt. Bachelor, skiers will tour on the generally downhill course from the Sunrise Lodge to the Wanoga Snow Park. Busses will shuttle competitors back to the Sunrise Lodge.

Afterwards, make sure to attend Saturday night’s post-race festivities. The banquet and awards ceremony will feature food and entertainment, as well as $1000 in cash prizes and over $1500 in raffle prizes.
